A need was recognized for a Healthy Work Environment (HWE) when the writer was staffing at a local hospital during a conversation with the unit supervisor. A literature search identified that a health care organization can better retain and recruit nurses, increase patient satisfaction, ensure reimbursement, and avoid harmful effects to patients associated with an environment that is considered a HWE. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) plays a pivotal role in mentoring and guiding nursing staff to create and drive a transition to a HWE. In this project, the CNS student, through an informal needs assessment, identified a need for a HWE, collaborated with the appropriate staff, created ways to implement a HWE, and identified projected outcomes. Through implementing and sustaining a HWE, the CNS, in collaboration with nursing staff, will improve patient outcomes.
