Bed rest has been a common intervention for critically ill hospitalized adults in the intensive care unit (ICU). Research is beginning to reveal that the associated benefits with this practice are observed in short term patient outcomes, however there appear to be more adverse long term effects with prolonged immobility. The negative impacts of prolonged hospitalization and immobility have trended into an increased length of stay in the hospital to 5.2 days, in contrast to the normal 3 to 5 days. The prolonged visit translates into an increase in cost to the hospital; therefore there is a need for performance improvement. The question is can enhancement in patient care be accomplished by engaging the ICU nursing staff in an educational opportunity concerning the positive outcomes of implementing early and progressive patient mobility and will it create a paradigm shift in cultural dynamics. A program Evaluation/Education based project (EBP) was designed to evaluate staff educational outcomes related to the implementation of an early progressive mobility plan within a nine bed ICU in a small Midwestern hospital. The purpose of this project was evaluating the effectiveness of an educational session that will be presented on progressive mobility in relationship to staff implementation of progressive mobility. The intent of this project is to prevent functional decline in hospitalized ICU patients age 65 years and older and to reduce hospital cost.
