The primary provider is the front line of the medical profession in illness prevention, disease management and wellness promotion; therefore, they are uniquely qualified to manage the care of the growing transgender population. The transgender population requires screenings for issues affecting both gender of origin and gender of choice. Statistics show the transgender patient struggles with access to primary health care as well as social, economic and mental health issues. The purpose of this paper is to provide basic information to assist the primary provider to better serve the transgender population with information about disease prevention, medication management, and health screenings specific to those in transition. The information about the care of the transgender patient was used to create a pamphlet for providers to reference during their practice. This pamphlet, along with the educational information was reviewed by Dr. Laurel Woods, a family practice provider working in a local clinic. The primary provider for this population should focus screening and preventative measures considering the hormones from both the biological gender and the transitioned gender. The population is at increased risk for mental health issues, poor social support, financial concerns, and discrimination so the primary provider must be sensitive to their needs when providing care to accomplish the best outcomes.
