Throughout my first few years of teaching I noticed a lack of self-sufficiency and personal accountability in my high school students. Prior to high school many students are simply passed on regardless of academic success and often coddled resulting in them being unprepared for high school. I watched many of my students fail because they lacked foundational skills. This led to my research question to find procedures and strategies that can be implemented in the classroom for at-risk youth in alternative education environments. The research study examined high school students’ success through the implementation of a student accountability system and self-efficacy strategies. This was chosen based on extensive research and because it was evident my students lacked independence and structure. I used a Correlation Analysis Method to conduct my research as it best handled my variables to demonstrate impact. This qualitative study determined that there was a correlation between the strategies I implemented and student success because the data demonstrated the majority of students either stayed at the same General Self-efficacy score or improved. I intend to extend the research I have done to encompass another semester as to get more data and share my data with my staff.
