Teaching for the development of social and emotional learning focuses on enhancing students’ ability to adapt to their learning environment. The aspiration is that students would perform more positively both academically and behaviorally in the classroom. Over a four-month time span thirty-two students participated in the Second Step program to determine if their attitudes towards academics and behavior would become more positive. Ten of the thirty-two students were chosen as the focus group for this study in which they participated in self-assessments, were observed while participating in the Second Step program and during their testing. This qualitative study used triangulation of self- assessments, observations, and interviews to determine the way social and emotional learning can create a more positive performance for students. The findings from this reach provide support for any teachers interested in implementing a social and emotional curriculum into their classroom in order to improve the positive performance of their students in the classroom and when taking standardized testing.
